SPELLING and VOCABULARY
Every other Thursday a spelling or vocabulary list will be sent home. The first week will focus on spelling, with a spelling test on Wednesday. The second week will focus on vocabulary, with a test on Wednesday as well. During the vocabulary test, the student must be able to read all words aloud, use 2 of the words in a sentence and give the definition of 2 words.
DAILY READING and WRITING
Reading every day is a must in 4th grade, as we are still learning important decoding, fluency, and comprehension strategies. We will have time to read in class, but every evening you will need to read for 20 minutes at home, write a summary over what you read, and hand it in the next day We will practice this skill in class and send home examples.
DAILY 5
During our Language Arts time, we rotate between 5 different stations while we have one on one and small group conferences to help strengthen individual skills.
The stations are:
WORD WORK ~ students practice phonics related skills using spelling and vocabulary lists and sight words.
READ TO SLEF ~ students read "good fit books" at their independent reading level for enjoyment.
WORK ON WRITING ~ students use different methods to write in a variety of ways.
READ TO SOMEONE ~ students read an informational piece with a partner and check for understanding.
LISTEN TO READING ~ students use technology to listen to a story being read aloud, or I read a story aloud.
